Visitor Level Call Tracking

Visitor level call tracking links each phone call to the individual website visit that led to it — the source, landing page and pages viewed. Call Bullet holds a number from your website pool for each visitor while they browse, so when they ring, the call is matched to that visit rather than to a channel average.

How is visitor level different from source level tracking?

The difference is how much detail each call carries.

LevelHow it worksWhat a call tells you
Source levelOne number per channelThe channel only, e.g. Google Ads
Visitor levelA number held per visitor from a poolChannel, campaign, landing page and pages viewed for that visit

Source level is static tracking; visitor level is dynamic. Both are compared in static vs dynamic call tracking.

How does visitor level tracking work?

When someone lands on your site, the Call Bullet script reads where they came from and takes a free number from the website pool. That number is held for the visitor while they browse. When they call it, Call Bullet knows which visit it belongs to and records that visit's details against the call.

Once the visit ends and the number has been free long enough, it goes back into the pool for someone else — see session based number pools.

What does a visitor level call record show?

Each call becomes a small story about one visit.

  • Source and medium, for example Google Ads or organic search.
  • Campaign and keyword, where the link carried them.
  • Landing page — the first page the visitor saw.
  • When the visit started and when the call was made.
  • Call duration, answered status, recording and transcript.

How do you set it up?

If you already have a website pool, you already have visitor level tracking.

  1. Add your main business number to the Call Bullet workspace.
  2. Create a website pool for each location on Buy numbers.
  3. Install the WordPress plugin or the tracking script on every page.
  4. Make sure advert links carry UTM tags so campaign detail is captured.
  5. Visit the site from a test link, call the swapped number and open the call to check the visit details.

What can you learn from visitor level data?

Visitor level data shows which pages persuade people to ring. A Leeds roofer might find that most calls start on the 'flat roof repairs' page, not the home page — a clear signal for where to spend on content and adverts.

It also helps separate good traffic from bad: if one campaign's visitors call within seconds and another's never do, the first is reaching people ready to buy. For SEO-specific use, read call tracking for SEO.

What about privacy and consent?

Visitor level tracking processes data about website visits, so it belongs in your privacy notice and, where it uses cookies or similar storage, your consent approach. The ICO's guidance on cookies and similar technologies explains UK rules.

Call Bullet tracks visits to attribute calls; it does not build advertising profiles. If you record calls, tell callers.

What are the limits?

If the pool runs short, two visitors can briefly share a number, which can blur attribution. Visitors who block scripts see your main number and appear as direct. And a visitor who leaves, comes back days later and rings may be matched to their latest visit, not the first one.

Key takeaways

  • Visitor level tracking links each call to one website visit.
  • It needs a dynamic pool with enough numbers for concurrent visitors.
  • Landing page data shows which pages make people ring.
  • Include it in your privacy notice and consent approach.
  • Pool size and blocked scripts are the main accuracy limits.

Frequently asked questions

Is visitor level tracking the same as dynamic number insertion?

DNI is the method; visitor level tracking is the result. DNI holds a number per visitor so calls can be matched to visits.

Can I see every page a caller viewed?

Call Bullet records the visit's source and landing page against the call; how much path detail you see depends on your setup.

Does it identify the caller personally?

It records the caller's phone number and the visit. It does not look up who the person is from the visit.

How many numbers do I need?

Enough for the visitors browsing at the same time at your busiest hour.

Do I need cookie consent?

Follow the ICO's rules for your site; include call tracking in your privacy notice and consent approach.

Does it work for offline calls?

No. Offline placements use fixed numbers, which give source level detail only.
