Call Bullet

Calls from ads vs calls from website

Calls from ads happen straight from a call button on the ad; calls from the website happen after someone clicks the ad and rings the number on your page. Google tracks the first with call assets and needs extra setup for the second. Call Bullet tracks website calls with your own UK numbers and the captured click ID.

What is the difference between the two?

The difference is where the caller was when they dialled.

How does Google track calls from ads?

Calls from ads are tracked with call assets or call-only ads and call reporting. Google shows a forwarding number in the ad, connects the call to your line and logs duration and caller area code. Details are on Google's call assets help page.

This works well and costs nothing extra. Its limits are that you only get Google's summary, not a recording, and it counts any call over the minimum length as a conversion.

How are calls from the website tracked?

Website calls need the page to show a number that can be tied back to the visit.

Google's own way is to swap your number for a Google forwarding number using a snippet. The alternative is a call tracker. With Call Bullet, the swap script captures the GCLID when an ad visitor lands, shows one of your website pool numbers, matches the call to that visit and uploads it to Google Ads as an imported conversion.

Read Google forwarding numbers explained for Google's method and GCLID call tracking for how Call Bullet's matching works.

Which share of calls comes from each route?

It depends on the business and the campaign type, and you should measure rather than guess.

Emergency services such as locksmiths or drain clearance often see most calls straight from the ad, because the searcher wants help now. Considered purchases such as conservatories, legal services or private healthcare usually see more website calls, because people read before they ring. Once both routes are tracked, the Sources report in Call Bullet and the call asset report in Google Ads show the real split for your account.

How do I report both without double counting?

Use one primary conversion action per route and never track the same call in two primary actions.

  1. Keep Google's “Calls from ads” action for calls straight from call assets, and keep it primary.
  2. Use Call Bullet's imported call action for website calls and make it primary.
  3. Set Google's website call conversion and any tel: click action to secondary or remove them.
  4. Check the Conversions column for a week. Each real call should appear once.
  5. In Call Bullet, filter Sources to Google Ads to see website calls with recordings and keywords.

Because calls from ads never touch your website, Call Bullet cannot match them to a GCLID. Google's call reporting is the right tool for that route.

Which route gives better data?

Website calls tracked by Call Bullet give richer data: a full recording, transcript, landing page, keyword and the caller's journey across visits. That makes them ideal for proving quality and training bidding on real enquiries.

Calls from ads give faster, simpler data with no setup beyond call reporting. For many UK service businesses, the best results come from tracking both and comparing their cost per qualified enquiry. Read why Google Ads calls do not match real enquiries to filter out noise from both routes.

What does this look like in practice?

Picture a Leeds dental practice with an 0113 number and a £900 a month search budget. Call reporting shows 34 calls straight from ads, mostly from people searching “emergency dentist Leeds” on a phone. Call Bullet shows another 21 calls from ad visitors who read the treatment pages first, mostly about implants and Invisalign.

The website calls are fewer but worth far more. Because they now upload with a higher value, bidding shifts budget towards treatment keywords. The figures are illustrative, but they show why both routes need measuring.

How do I set up both routes step by step?

Most UK accounts can set up both routes in under half an hour.

  1. In Google Ads, add a call asset with your main number or a Call Bullet fixed number, and switch on call reporting.
  2. Check the “Calls from ads” conversion action exists and is primary.
  3. In Call Bullet, buy a small website pool with a local area code such as 0161 or 0117.
  4. Install the swap script or WordPress plugin on every landing page.
  5. Connect Google Ads in Call Bullet, choose the customer account and run the validation check.
  6. Set Google's website call conversion and any tel: click action to secondary.
  7. Wait a week, then compare the two routes by cost per qualified enquiry.

If you later move to call-only campaigns, the same rules apply: calls straight from the ad stay with Google call reporting, while any visitor who reaches your site is tracked by Call Bullet. Keeping the routes separate also makes it much easier to explain results to a client or a finance director, because each conversion has one clear source and, for website calls, a recording behind it.

Which route suits each type of UK business?

The right balance depends on how urgently customers need you and how much they research first.

  • Emergency trades such as locksmiths, glaziers and drain engineers: most calls come straight from the ad, so call assets matter most.
  • Considered services such as solicitors, private clinics and home improvements: more calls come after reading the website, so website tracking matters most.
  • Multi-branch businesses: website calls with a local number per branch show which location each ad really feeds.
  • Agencies: track both for every client so you can show cost per qualified enquiry on each route.

Key takeaways

  • Calls from ads start on the search result; website calls start on your page.
  • Google call reporting covers calls from ads.
  • Website calls need forwarding numbers or a call tracker with GCLID capture.
  • Keep one primary action per route to avoid double counting.
  • Website calls usually carry richer evidence and often higher value.

Frequently asked questions

Are calls from ads and website calls the same conversion?

No. They come from different routes and are usually tracked by different conversion actions.

Can Call Bullet track calls straight from my ads?

Not as a matched ad click, because the caller never visits your website. Use Google call reporting for those. Call Bullet tracks the website calls.

Can I put a Call Bullet number in my call asset?

You can, and Call Bullet will record and log the call, but Google then reports it through call assets rather than as an imported conversion.

Why do I see website calls in Call Bullet but not in Google?

Usually because the Google Ads connection is not set up, the count rule filtered them out, or the delivery delay has not passed yet.

Which route should I bid on?

Both can feed bidding as long as each call is counted once and qualified calls carry a sensible value.
